DETROIT -- For the second time this year, Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are announcing a recall and urging customers to park vehicles outside because of increased fire concerns. According to the Associated Press, the recall impacts 281,000 vehicles in the U.S. and the companies are urging customers park affected vehicles outside because they don’t yet how to fix the problem.
The recall impacts 245,000 of the Hyundai Palisade models and 36,000 of the Kia Telluride models from the 2020-22 model years.
The issue stems from a problem with the circuit board in the tow hitch which can accumulate debris and moisture over time, which can lead to an electrical short and an increased risk of fire. So far, the companies are aware of 25 fires or melting incidents in the U.S. and Canada, however no crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of those issues.
Hyundai says it will have dealerships inspect the wiring and remove a fuse as an interim repair, however Kia does not have an interim repair as of yet. The companies are working to develop a permanent fix for the problem. Both companies have stopped selling new models of the impacted vehicles until a permanent fix can be created.
Earlier this year, the companies announced a recall of an estimated 485,000 vehicles over concerns regarding the possible contamination in the antilock brake control module. That issues also led to several fires and drivers of those impacted cars were also encouraged to park their vehicles outside until repairs could be made.
