The Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle Disappointed Loan Move Was Blocked Late In Window - The Newcastle United Blog

Despite being very pleased with Newcastle’s summer business, Eddie Howe was keen on adding more faces to his squad in the final days of the window. There was a last-ditch attempt to bring in West Ham’s right-back Harrison Ashby on deadline day as cover for the injured Emil Krafth.

The loan market was also scoured with Howe admitting domestic clubs were reluctant to do business with the rising Magpies. Here is what Howe said after the window closed:

“We are against everyone else. Domestic clubs didn’t want to be seen to be helping us.

“We’ll have to take that, that is part of where we are at the moment. I think we have certainly found there is no one there, ready to do us a favor.

“It’s the narrative regarding us that has changed. I think if there is anything domestically teams will put their price up if it is Newcastle.

“That is the same around the world, that is something we are having to deal with.

“That is why we have walked away from a few deals because I think it is important we are not seen as that club that will pay what is asked. I think it has to be fair.”

Fabrizio Romano has named Christian Pulisic as one of the domestic players Howe was keen on bringing in on loan. However, the move was blocked by new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

This is what the transfer guru told the Que Golazo podcast (which can be seen below):

“Strong interest from Newcastle. Newcastle were obsessed with Christian. They wanted him. But they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”

Pulisic was forced to remain at Stamford Bridge but was reportedly furious at potential moves being blocked. With Thomas Tuchel recently being sacked, the American may find more opportunities under new manager Graham Potter.

If not, Pulisic may be targeted in the January window. A loan with an option to buy could be beneficial for both parties. The 24-year-old was just a late substitute in Potter’s debut, a 1-1 draw at home to RB Salzburg in the Champions League.

So it sounds like it wasn’t because we are Newcastle it sounds like it’s because they wanted a permanent transfer and seemingly told many clubs that.

Nufc4ever Was it a 4 team community shield that season or like a umbro cup?

Just in case you missed it:

Ashly certainly didn’t understand Newcastle. If he had invested properly in the team he bought, he could have made it a great team. They would have made him money playing in Europe every year and challenging for local cups. He could have endeared himself to the people of the toon. He could have been a somebody but he left a nobody and we’re happy to be rid of him. That’s what happens when you don’t understand people and don’t care. What an opportunity he missed. Amanda understands and wants the best for the city and the supporters of our team. If she continues to put her right foot forward, she will be legend.

He would of been a fantastic addition and would of added real quality on the wings something we are desperate for.

That little old club in the north getting the big clubs all worried and panicking of what is to come.

They know as well as we do that at some point in the near future we will take over the lot and sit firmly atop the football pyramid and watch the sea of black and white sweep across the globe

Howe said the clubs didn’t want to deal with us and that’s good enough for me and not really hard to believe either

What sayest thou oh Richard Masters, Dicky Keys, Gary Lineaker, and a whole host of like minded pundits

Mund Where do i sign up ? Oh silly me, I did eons ago

Magic, go next wed mate for 10 days. That’s all the body can take. When I used to play golf (before I lost an eye and then the more recent affliction) I had a set of Taylormade. Nicely weighted for me, but hey, I’m now disgusted at mesel for talking about golf or even admitting I used to play. Think I’d rather own a Pug…… well, mebbes not 🙂

Sorry to burst a bubble, but I don’t think we will be doing any major sweeping across the globe “in the near future”. It’s going to take a good bit of time to even get in the CL I reckon.

For example, some on here said that because we mullered Arsenal at the end of last season, that we were ready to equal them this season. But by the look of the table, we’re not, and they have a much more talented a deeper squad than we do. In my opinion it’s going to take time.

But I could design a few spinning paper plates covered in tinfoil and flush them oot of the aircraft. That would confuse the eejit, Putin

Magic we’ll catch up another time. Sadly I’m not sure Fenham will be on for a chat and a beer as he suggested, despite my being a fellow hard core Toon fan. Cest la vie, it’s a pity to fall out with people.

Oi, where did that bus come from! Right then, have a DOUBLE repost!

Anyone wanting to watch Belgium v Wales on a legal stream go to S4c on your TV apps and follow the instructions to register. Click on watch live, select the game. Commentary is in Welsh but I don’t need commentary to enjoy a game. If your telly doesn’t support it then search for S4c on your t’internet device. Quality picture mind.

Comment #79 This is what happens when SWMBO puts me in charge of the remotes.

Alright, I’ll come clean.

She’s gone oot with her mates.

Great post #3 absolutely bang on. However he didn’t want to be that person for us… For whatever reason he hated us with a passion. We as an amazing fan base we are, the best out there give him a chance at first and he through it straight back in our faces?

However, the only one good thing he ever did was sell us to the PIF, et al. A truly amazing professional set up which is what we deserve, what the club deserves and the great city of Newcastle upon Tyne… Selling us to this great set up and IMO best in world football, wasn’t out of having the supporters of NUFC best interests at heart it was because they clearly give him an offer he simply could not refuse and couldn’t be bettered. So I won’t really thank him for that…

Dispicable man is what we endured for 14 years.

Anyway I hope he does one of his saving a business tricks buy the makems get them in the EPL and once there give them the biggest hiding of their lives as they yo yo, lol 😉

AGM, best time to get a kebab then. Just be prepared to sleep in the spare room 🙂

…and didn’t hide the rum…

Ah so you play the Big Bill Werbeniuk school of pool 😀 😀 i used to love watching the big Canadian playing back in the day, he used to drink 10 pints before every match, and then about another 10 pints during the match back in the day. I actually met him in real life in Lurgan at a snooker competition involving Tony Mayo Doug Mountjoy and David Taylor who was known as the Silver Fox, big Bill was beat in the semi final and was talking to me at the bar he ordered two pints and had the first one drank before the bar man had finished pulling the second, he put it straight down the hatch Wor B, I never seen anything like it in my life, he must have drank it in about 3 seconds 😀 😀

SirRhosis, brilliant idea except for my comment at 15.

Anyone got the number for DeliverToon? 😆

O ye of little faith

Snag bubble does one think he is bursting…? Maybe he is own…? Certainly not mine.

If we went the way that some always thought with the things they say on here we’d of been relegated the last two seasons and have Ashley still as an owner…

Good job they are rarely if ever right

I know we are supposed to avoid politics, but what do you think the chances are of that eejit launching a nuke? It could play havoc with fixtures.

Yanited @NE5westend · 10h On this day in 1984: that crazy 5-5 at Loftus Road. Newcastle led 4-0 at half-time with Chris Waddle contributing a hat-trick and were 5-3 up with just five minutes remaining, but in typical fashion blew it. #QPR #NUFC

There seems to be quite a few not posting as often as they used to? ? ?

It’s monster spider season.

Our latest visitor gave the cat a canny battle!

Off to the vet in the morning, but not to worry folks, loads of cats lead a full and happy life with one eye.

Sorry mate, unintentionally insensitive there.

If the cat doesn’t pull through, I’ll call the next one SirRhosis.

I’d rather you just called it Pussy Magnet 🙂

I definitely think we paid top dollar for Isak, although that assessment may change, given his age and potential, and we definitely paid too much for Wood. But these were a needs must situation, for players we had to have in a key position. Certainly though there appears to be a premium placed on players we enquire about, but we simply can’t throw money at this project, not just for FFP reasons, but also PR, because of the optics it needs to be approached responsibly, and that will require some patience. I like our side, it definitely gives us value on the match day ticket, which is primary, but we are in fact quite a way off being a sustainable top 6 proposition, two seasons minimum I think, and only then if we are run very well in the interim. But that’s okay, in fact, having to have the brakes on will serve us well in the long run. In the meantime though we really need to have our better players consistently available and two further good attacking options in January, a winger and a centre mid to realistically finish top 8 this term. That may not happen, frustratingly, but we do need to understand the challenges that the club is facing, and understand that we’ll get there eventually and then dominate, if we do this right.

Nicky the ball tosser, Completely, where do I start with that. We totally over paid for Wood, his market value now is probably £8M, maybe £12.5 when we bought him, what else could we have possibly done under the circumstances and the length of time it took to get our other deals done, we probably paid £5/8M over the odds for Dan Burn as well, given the circumstances both have proved to be excellent value as we’re still in the PL. Bang on about image as well, given the scrutiny on us we can’t be seen to be throwing money about given our league standing, there are loads of factors dictating our path. Nobody is talking about the ridiculous money we’re spending, but we are getting loads of plaudits from everywhere about how well we are going about our business. The owners are playing a blinder.

Pity cfc wouldn’t let Pulisic go… it would seem that we really wanted him. Woulda been a great signing.

So sorry to hear you lost an eye mate in the past, thats really shocking Sir and leaves me a bit lost for words. On a lighter note i see you head off to Tenerife next wednesday lad, are you going to Playa de las Americas in Tenerife by any chance?

I’m sure one of the so called big six will open up the door to the Toon. They will see that we mean business and building that bridge now will heap mutual respect for the near future when we become one of them. The issue for them now is they don’t want to fall out of that accolade, well it’s going to happen either way, we will get that spot, so which one is going to be bold and have that wake up call?

Owners are anything but playing a blinder…they’ve not overpaid for anyone and everyone says that great, but thats exactly what they should be doing to make our claim for european slot.

Ps …they overpaid for Wood and Isak and Botman yet no-one says a thing!

We have been left threadbare with no-one on the bench who can make an ounce of difference.

A poor summer recruitment IMO.

I sincerely hope they put things right in January.

Assassin…I dont see why any of the big six would open their door to us…they all vote for everything the Prem are doing to slow us down…they have too much to lose…they dont want us anywhere near them.

sparky55, All the journalists and pundits are complimenting us on how well we are doing things, nobody is pointing the finger at us. I’m not sure what you expect given our progress.

What is your measure for how “well” we are doing?

Wouldnt it be better if they were all pointing fingers at us because we spent a fortune and were in the top 6?

I’d rather we were getting dogs abuse for over-spending and were in the top six and Eddie had a selection problem every week.

As it happens we underspent, we’re mid table at best and the team picks itself.

But were being good boys and being sensible…do me a favour ffs!

People may well ask what progress we’ve made. Does that really need answering??? I will try. We’ve gone in to a season for the first time in 11 years knowing 100% we will not be relegated, some people thinking top six or even top four. We have a positive GD for the first time in ten years. Nearly every signing we make we break our transfer record. The bogs have had the Shay Given posters taken down and given a lick of paint. There are no more Dutch stag do’s taking up hundreds of tickets in the Leazes. The club is United. What more do people want at this stage of the TO. Gone are the days when you could just buy Drogba or Robinho because you were rich.

sparky55, We are five points off the top six.

I sense a difference of opinion on how aggressively the club should be chasing world domination!

Any way it’s late, time to pop off my clogs, have a cup of Anijsmelk and say welterusten 🙂

I have continued over the last two years to have quarterly checkups on my stage 4 prostate cancer. The treatment (hormone injections every 3 months plus Xtandi medication daily) has managed to slow the spread of the cancer.

I am just so pleased that we have now been taken over by rich and ambitious owners and Eddie Howe is now the head coach.

It is as it is.

My cancer was first diagnosed in April, 2011 and it became stage four in late December, 2016

That's when it spread through the bones to several areas of the body.

My treatment has also included radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

I remain in awe of the kind and effective treatment I have received from the Doctors and Nurses.

While stage four prostate cancer is terminal, I hope to be around for a while yet.

Let's also hope Newcastle can shock everybody this coming season with maybe even a top six finish!

It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.
