It’s offering to buy back any coaster-brake bikes sold with i-Motion 3 hubs.

SRAM has issued a voluntary recall on the internally geared hubs found on some of its Electra model bikes with coaster brakes.

The company’s i-Motion 3 three-speed hubs—the coaster brake version—are being recalled after reports of brakes in the hubs failing. So far, SRAM has heard five reports of brake failure involving the hubs, with one crash resulting in a minor injury. However, anyone with a bike featuring an i-Motion 3 with coaster brakes is advised to stop riding it immediately.

The recalled hubs were sold on the Electra Cruiser Custom 3i, Electra Coaster 3i, Electra Hawaii 3i, Electra Hawaii 3i 24, and Electra Straight 8. They have also been sold as aftermarket parts for other bicycles.

In total, SRAM estimates that around 7,000 hubs have been sold in the U.S., with an additional 700 in Canada. The recall applies to all bikes with this cruiser brake model that do not have independent front brakes.

According to the company, some of the affected hubs may have been manufactured with grease that gets sticky over time, especially if the bike sits unused for a while or is stored in a hot area. When the grease becomes sticky, the brake pawls in the hub can fail to engage.

To see if your hub falls under the recall, look for “SRAM i-Motion 3” printed on the hub shell. (If you’re still unsure about your Electra, take it to a bike shop and get it checked.) SRAM has offered to buy affected bikes back at prices based on the Bicycle Blue Book—most of the models in question are listed at roughly $350—or else help local dealers request compatible new hubs.

SRAM independently announced the recall last month, but due to the government furlough in December and January, it didn’t get posted to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website until Thursday.
