A Victorian man could be slapped with thousands of dollars in fines after officers allegedly found a two metre boa constrictor at his home.

Officers from the state's conservation regulator initially inspected the 43-year-old's property at Nagambie in the Goulburn Valley in July last year over reports he was keeping a carpet python without a licence.

Instead, they allegedly found the boa constrictor - a non-venomous species of snake that uses its heavy body to kill its prey by constricting around it and cutting off blood supply.

Officers alleged he was keeping the animal illegally, given it is an international species that requires a certain permit.

They last week charged him with keeping a controlled pest without authorisation and he will face Seymour Magistrates' Court in July.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of more than $43,600.

"Illegally possessing prohibited pest animals in Victoria risks our environment," Hume manager of regulatory operations Greg Chant said.

"A boa constrictor poses a significant predatory threat to native fauna if it was to escape, be released or become established in the wild.

"We encourage the public to continue reporting any suspicious wildlife activity like this to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000."
